Literature Review

            Castleden et al (2012) argue that the historical injustices that the Aboriginals faced during the ages of colonization have continued to affect their existence even in recent times. To begin with, during the colonial times the Aboriginals were moved into reserves where they were promised ‘civilization.’ In the reserves they were required to change their lives, acquire an education and a new way of making a living; however, this life led to discrimination as the colonizers took up all the fertile lands. In the end, they were prevented from visiting certain places and areas outside the reserves which cultivated segregation. Belanger et al (2015) admits that such issues are part of the reasons that Aboriginals fail to qualify for mortgages. For instance, the Aboriginals lack any credible credit history through which banks can rely on. In the end, Aboriginals fail to access mortgages that they would use to make homes that would inadvertently reduce chances of homelessness. The credibility of Aboriginals would have been built if they were given chances by financial institutions; however, as a result of discrimination and racism they have been denied that chance for hundreds of years which have played a significant role in the high rates of homelessness in Aboriginals.

Additionally, in the reserves there is poor housing that has not attracted the attention of any investors who would be interested in renovation. Combined with over population and poor living conditions such as lack of sanitation most people leave and move to the cities only to become homeless (Schiff, 2011). In essence, Aboriginals move from the reserves in such of better lives as their lands were taken from them through trickery of force and thus made them change their lives and try to adapt to that of the reserves provided by the colonizing government.

            In addition, the actual transition from the reserve to urban regions has not been smooth considering the financial problems the Aboriginals have (Linden et al, 2012). There are numerous factors that have plagued this transition for the Aboriginals for years; one of the factors is discrimination. The apparent historical discrimination that the Aboriginals face is a result of the fact that they are viewed as financial unstable people and thus are not given priorities with regards to employment for instance. However, the biggest hindrance to Aboriginals smooth transition from the reserves into the urban areas is finances. A deeper analysis of the situation indicates that there is a structural challenge in the sense that there is no one responsible for the Aboriginals (Cloke, 2013). Notably, the Canadian government has taken up the challenge and is designing strategies meant to improve the situation; unfortunately, the efforts are made when it is too late. For instance, a majority of the Aboriginals that are uneducated are a direct result of government’s neglect and trivialization of the issue. Therefore, finding ways of educating the elderly for example is a wasted effort and thus other strategies ought to be considered.

Both the government and non-governmental organizations have formed organizations in trying to solve the effects of social problems in the city. Children’s Aid of New York is an organization that assists children and youths by giving them necessary assistance to succeed in school and life after school. It is a non-profit organization, and the current purpose of the organization is to ensure that there are no boundaries among the young peoples’ ambitions. Besides, the organization also ensures that there is no limit to the abilities of young people. The mission of the organization is to help children affected by poverty to succeed and thrive, both in education and life after school. The organization provides comprehensive support to the children, youth and the families in neighborhoods of New York City in an effort to achieve its goal. Its ideology is that all children have the potential to prosper. However, children from low-income families or ones with emotional stress end up surviving. When children lead a life of survival, their potential is limited. It is, therefore, from this perspective that Children’s Aid felt a need to address the issue, as it is unacceptable for the children to live in a historic city of opportunity and face barriers that hinder them from attaining their goals.

            In 1992, following a rise in social concerns among the young population in the society, Children’s Aid partnered with the New York City Department of Education. The partnership aimed to incorporate a strong curriculum program and establish both children and family support programs to eliminate educational barriers for the youth. Since then, the organization has grown over two decades to sixteen community schools. The second stage of growth took place during the City-sponsored expansion of community schools, and from the development that began in late 2014, the organization saw the addition of several schools as part of the expansion effort (69). The organization is a powerhouse solution for young people. It is constituted of social workers, teachers, health care providers, and coaches. Such professionals understand how to raise children healthily and robustly that helps them prosper in school and life. The organization recognizes that the alleviation of poverty cannot be based on a single service or program at a single point in time, and this is why it supports the family as a whole and not only children. It has been functional for more than one hundred and sixty years that has helped families turn their lives around. It helps connect young people and their families with the requirements they need to learn, grow, and manage their lives.

To address this challenge, the organization has continued to seek financial support from individual, institutions, and government, but donations only cover about half of the budget. Just like the founding fathers, James Adams believed that America become a land much better to accommodate all people from all walks of life. For past centuries, the American dream was to complete high school education, go through college education and graduate. After graduation, it was expected that one would land a well-paying job which would then enable them raise their own families (Adams 10). Many people believed that America would one day become a better country where every person would have an opportunity to work hard and become successful. In this way, one’s American dream to become successful is dependent on his/her efforts to access education, especially college education. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the benefits of obtaining a higher education (college education) and how it enables one to fulfill his/her American Dream.    

Students go through the college education to acquire experience that are needed in the today’s workforce. While the idea of becoming successful is pleasant, it’s nearly impossible without one going through college and graduating with a degree. As a student proceeds with education from the high to higher and highest levels he/she gets to acquire several skills that fits into multiple careers (Pambudi 14). In most cases, the students are tested in more than one subject and the teachers expects them to pass in every examination. Therefore, the students have to work hard to master what they have learnt in class and apply the knowledge in the examination papers. Hahn (p. 660) argues that education opens the mind of a student to see things beyond the ordinary perspective. In other words, education makes students become creative in more than one aspect. Ideally, the American Dream is all about making America great in a manner that each person becomes successful according to their determinations (Adams 10). In the same way, going through a college education requires hardworking and determination.  Such that success is dependent on how much the student prepared for the exams. That is, students who work hard by revising past papers and doing extensive researches will ultimately pass compared to those who sit and wait for the exams. While preparing for the exams, the student develops a culture of hardworking which makes him determined even in the life after campus. In that manner, it becomes easy to land a better job and stick onto that job for a very long time and accumulate much money that would make him/her live a much better life.

Confidence is an important aspect in the realization of American dream in that everyone has to believe in him/herself. To believe that they too can make things better just as any other billionaire and become successful. In a surveys carried out in the year 2018 to examine Americans perception about higher education,  71% of the total 1,600 agreed that higher education was good (AAC&U, n.p).  In most colleges, students are required to propose topics for study and later research extensively about their proposed topics. Later, they have to come before a team of professors and other students and show their findings about their topics of study.  In which they have to explain every bit of what they encountered in the process of doing their researches. In speaking before the crowd, these students gain confidence and exposure for their thinking. Also, they learn and develop communication skills that makes them capable of convincing other people to believe their ideas. After school, the students get it easy to approach several companies in search of job opportunities. Since they have learnt to become confident they express themselves much better before the interviewing panels thereby granting them higher chance of getting jobs.

            Another benefit of a college education is that it makes students responsible in their own works, both intellectually and socially. Taking a scenario of a college with a library, students and professor will better explain the point of responsibility. The library is stocked with several books, newspapers and internet facilities. Here, the professor gives an assignment and ask the students to go into the library and research the assignment. In this scenario, the students are researching about their assignment in the library facilities’ so that they find facts and accurate answers. In other words, students who don’t go to the library and research about their topics are likely to fail simply because they won’t be in a position to provide facts and accurate findings. The professor does not force any student to study or do the research. Instead, he/she gives marks according to how each student expresses the ideas. It is the duty of the student to go and get right materials to assist him/her come up with accurate findings. In this way, the students are provided with freedom to choose what they want to do; and they have to become responsible to choose the right thing.  Liobikienė et al. (p. 3419) emphasizes that being responsible makes an individual behave in an environmental-friendly manner.  For most employers they simply need employee who are responsible and can work without being supervised. When they get people of such trait they usually assign them higher positions with good salaries. Since these workers will always keen to monitor every section of the company and report any issue before developing into levels that might affect most operations of the company. Therefore, a college education is an important step towards the American Dream because it instills a culture of being responsible to work on personal level.

            In a sum up, a college education has got several benefits that makes it a perfect key to unlocking one’s American Dream.  Although most colleges charge more on fee and accommodations for their students; parents should put efforts to raise the money and educate their children up to a higher education such as college education. In doing that they will be securing the future of their children. The main purpose of the American dream is to have America become a country that awards each of her citizen according to their efforts. My observation is that; if by any chance all students decided to become focused on their studies and worked harder in their class assignments and examinations; then most evidently the American Dream would come into a reality in the shortest time possible. However, some of the students kills this dream just because they don’t want to work hard in their class assignments. Which is a very bad for any student that wants to become successful in life. To me, the surest way of securing a better future is educating students until they complete their colleges. Education gives them an experience needed in the job places which will enable them do the right thing. Also, education reduces their anxiety and improves their confidence so they become more willing to approach various companies and managers in search of job opportunities. In the same manner, it makes students responsible for their own works and those pertaining to the society. Therefore, each student should work hard in their class assignment and proceed from high school level to college level to be in a position to land a beautiful paying job. Then use that opportunity to accumulate more resources and make themselves wealthier.

One of the most significant social issues concerning status, power and class in today’s society is economic disparity. In which there is unequal access to economic resources, in the form of wealth, opportunities, land and capital between the high and low social classes. Global economic disparity refers to inequality in accessing economic resources between the developed and less developed states. For instance, developed states having higher chances to accessing resources compared to less developed states since they have higher level of wealth, land, capital and opportunities.

According to Simeon (p. 802), less developed countries have high cases of unemployment, under-employment and low wage employment which reflects a low living standard. It becomes difficult for the government to attend to each citizen’s need and satisfy their unlimited desires. On the other side, developed countries have got more resources and their governments are in position to supply more resources to various sectors of the economy thereby making most citizens get satisfied. In this way, they become more capable of enjoy resources within their countries and those in the geographical areas compared to the least developed states. Thereby leading to a big gap between the poor and the rich social classes in the two categories.

            A major cause of economic disparity among states is natural disaster such as earthquakes and floods. Mostly, natural disasters interrupts the normal workings of the economy.             Economic disparities leads to poverty. In fact, Grusky (506) explains that inequality interrupts the education sector and economic stability. In other words, what the author means is that economic inequality makes some countries have much resources whereas others have less resources. The ones with less resources are more likely to experience poor education system and economic instability. Which can lead to suffering from hunger due to inadequate supply of food. Similarly, poor education can lead to low level of literacy which makes it hard for their students to become creative and utilize existing opportunities. All these could lead to economic instability and uneven distribution of incomes among working class members. Thereby making most citizens suffer from stress managing human, physical and social resources which are already limited.

In summary, global economic disparity since all countries should have equal access to economic resources. However, natural disasters; imperfect competitions and unbalanced education systems has always led to economic disparity among countries. In this light, there is need to emphasize on reducing corruption and support agricultural sectors of various countries. Corruption leads to resources being lost or allocated to areas that might not need them. Therefore, stopping corruption will assist in allocating resources to the right place. Such as education and agricultural sectors thus make all students learn from a fair system that makes them competitive both at the local and international levels.

Today, the number of single-parent families led by single mothers is continually increasing in most parts of America. Ideally, wives and husbands are expected to live together and jointly share the responsibility of bringing up their children. However, most wives have become single mothers and singly raise their children. In the “promise I can keep”, Edin and Kefalas (2005) give three leading explanations to illustrate why most women find themselves in the trap of single motherhood. Firstly, women are increasingly becoming economically independent such that they can raise the kids on their own. Secondly, many societies are continuously becoming generous to accept single mothers unlike in the past where single motherhood was given a negative perspective. Thirdly, the number of marriageable men is constantly dropping day and night making women to fear the risk of marrying ‘wrong husbands’.

In addition, the authors note that widespread availability of birth control strategies, growing acceptability of cohabitation and changing perspective about couples getting married just because a child is on the spot have also contributed to single motherhood ( Edin and Kefalas, 2005). Infact, Meyer (2015) claims that unstable cohabitations are as a result of the dramatic rise in cohabitation cases. Although most unmarried parents in European countries cohabitate and tend to attach longer for decades, most Americans would typically break up within a couple of years.

I agree with Edin and Kefalas on their argument that women avoid marriage simply because they revere it. Marriage is a lifetime choice and therefore it can positively or negatively affect one’s life in a significant way (Strauss, 2016). For that reason, women should have the power to decide for themselves, either to be married or not and the members of the society should always respect their decisions. The stories in the “promise I can keep” gives us a real picture of what poor single mothers undergo. Their experience and expectations should not be interpreted similarly to those of the middle-class society who decides to wait longer to get married.

Koichi Iwabuchi in his article, ‘Multinationalizing the multicultural: The commodification of “ordinary foreign residents” in a Japanese TV talk show’ brings up the concept of globalization clearly and how it has led to numerous transformations in Japan as a nation as well as its citizens.

    The presence and existence of foreigners in Japan have brought about both advantages and disadvantages to its people. For instance; the increasing demand for an international community due to the ever-rising populace interaction of foreigners from all over the world and the citizens of Japan has played a very significant role as far as enhancement of the commercial value and economic growth of the country is concerned. Consequently, the relationship between Japan and the states from which these non-nationals base their origin has also registered improvement building the international ties, which provide a very conducive environment to conduct international trade. Through this, the country has recorded a positive deviation on its economic growth scale. The existence of a peaceful setting to live in has also had its impacts whereby, as these visitors settle they introduce their different cultures and ways of life to the Japanese nationals as well as learning or even practicing the social and cultural practices of the Japanese. Through this, multiculturalism has been achieved leading to the appreciation and taking pride in diversity.

    Besides the many advantages that come along with the diversified nature of social and cultural beliefs and practices, some have proved disadvantageous too because specific methods compromise the morals and ethical values of an individual. The desire for Japan to become even more superior as far as economic superiority is concerned led to the enthusiastic devotion of the government itself together with the business firms in the country to pursue the states’ core interests through competition in the international arena. Through this, Japan created numerous opportunities for its people to interact freely and closely with foreigners, and majorly those from the west through cultural integration and trade encounters not only in Japan but also overseas. These manifestations were prominent during the era when Japan started to make strong its’ economic muscles. The author provides the reader with enough knowledge to facilitate an individual’s better understanding of the general concept and detailed meaning of globalization.
